I have signed up for your FEED so I can learn all about your ideas for journaling. Very excited to start my own journal. Please put hints for newbies like me.
One of the first hints I share is to encourage "newbies" like you is to ask yourself, "Why do I want to keep a journal?" By asking yourself this question you will likely tap into lots of ideas, reasons, and maybe even why you have never journaled before!
The second question I usually hear is what kind of journal should I buy? Now...this is where I start to have fun and say, "Choose a journal, or notebook, that you know you will write in! "
So start off with these two notions then write again and I promise I will be happy to stay by your side you begin the adventure of keeping a journal!
Joyce, Do you ever find yourself doing something and suddenly realize that it is something you remember seeing a parent do as habit when you were growing up? I remember my mother would always twiddle her thumb on the steering wheel as she drove along when she had something on her mind or when she was thinking as we talked. It was never impatient, more of an absent minded habit that she had always done. A few years ago I found myself doing the same thing.
The realization that I had picked up this behavior both elated and deflated me. If I was my own person and all grown up, why was I picking up this habit of my mother’s? Or was it part of me because it was a practiced behavior? How do I know I am really who I am versus different pieces of the people in my life.
I started mulling over what it was that makes me, “me”. As I looked over my life I could see certain behaviors I had incorporated into my being as I was growing up from my parents and relatives. And of course, peers greatly influenced my outside behaviors and not all of those habits were terribly enchanting.
What it is it that makes up, what totals and creates “me”? What makes me the person I am? And how much do I have to attribute to learned behaviors and environments, how much is truly me? I want to journal on this subject but have no idea how to do it. Do I write it as a letter to myself? I don't want to turn it into a novel (LOL!) but I also think it deserves its space. Thanks for any help you can send my way."
Hi! The first tip I would give myself, if this was my journaling; is to make a list to answer the question, "What makes me the person I am?" After you do this journaling, if you’d like some more ideas please ask!
Yes, I totally believe that our nighttime dreams are messages that we can pay attention to. I often title my dream before I write about it in my journal ---for me this is a quick method of "seeing" the messages quickly. Try it, I think you'll like it.
Hi Lucy, One journaling technique I have found to be so valuable is to write unsent letters to a person that I have had a conflict with. The important thing is to remember NOT to edit---remember this will be unsent.
Write what the decision is that you may have to make ..then write (no editing) any and all outcomes that are likely to occur. Have fun, and give yourself permission to really unlock any judgements from the past.
Here's a real easy idea to spark your creativity. Go through an old photo album and pull out a few of your favorite memories and then write that chapter/story.
I love asking myself questions and then grabbing my journal and write to tap into my natural knowing self! If you'd like to join me Please do...on my twitter page!
I just read your notice tip for this week and I was surprised by it. I am not sure what I think, if I'm a "winner" or not. Can You give me another writing idea?
I wondered if anyone would ask me a question about being a "winner"...so I am glad you are! I like this definition of win--- "to succeed in reaching a (place, etc.) esp. by great effort." So if you like this notion too, make a list of things you have done "with great effort" and then reread and embrace yourself as a winner.
Yes! Start off by having a dialogue with your body. (This is so fun and easy to do.) If you don't have my book you may want to order and read the chapter titled, "Creative Conversations". http://www.journalingforjoy.com/products.htm
Start off by making a list titled, "Changes I want and need to make." (And be sure NOT to edit at all.) Then let me know what you discover and I'll give you what I call, a next step assignment!
OK! Now reread your lists and choose the change you want to start with. Then mind map all the steps/things that will be necessary for this change to occur. Then...create a plan and get started!
Hi, I have a great journaling assignment design to help release and express your anger, etc. So if you write to me at joyce@journaiingforjoy.com and ask me to send I will send it to you right away.
I have practiced a habit for many years that sparks my writing every morning. I ask myself: What do I want from my day today? Then I close my eyes and allow a thought to come through. It's so easy and...guess what...there's always something new for me to think about then write more about.
What a great question! One of the reasons I love keeping a journal is that I become aware of what I want to do, be and have. So when I reread my journaling I get to...check up on myself! So the habit I encourage, to hold yourself accountable, is to reread what you write and then see if you are being congruent.
I just bought your book and I am wanting to know more about the sentence that's on the back cover "Are you the star of your own life?" Would you give me a tip to get started answering this question for myself?
Hi Dan, Write the question on a blank page of your journal and for the next several days pay close attention to what your answer is when you ask yourself this. Then write to me again and I'll give you another idea. Remember be honest with yourself, do NOT edit. And....have fun!
Hi Dan, Now write a description of yourself. Title it: This is who I am.(Allow yourself to add to this journal entry for at least a week.) Then reread and and tell me what you discover with this journaling. Then I'll suggest a next assignment! Have fun and remember do NOT edit!
Hi Amy, One "assignment" I do whenever I find myself repeating doing what I say I don't want...is to have a conversation with myself, in my journal. I ask myself questions like: I know I don't want to repeat this habit, what can I do to stop. Encourage yourself to allow anything and everything you that you consciously think and know...and also open up to the possibility of your subconscious mind may join in! Let me know what you discover.
Hi Patricia, A good step to start is to make a list of everything you are ready to let go of. After you've made that list reread and decide what you want to start with then write to me and ask for the next "assignment".

I have been having really elaborate nighttime dreams. Do you tell people to write down their dreams? I would like some ideas so I can begin.
Yes, I totally believe that our nighttime dreams are messages that we can pay attention to. I often title my dream before I write about it in my journal ---for me this is a quick method of "seeing" the messages quickly. Try it, I think you'll like it.

I really need to change my life. How can journaling help me?
Joyce, I loved your newsletter theme this month and have made my lists. Any hints how I can hold myself accountable?

I'd like to better understand why I keep repeating doing something I know I should stop doing? Any ideas for me?

I am having a really difficult time letting go of something in my past. Please give me a journaling assignment to help me.
Hi Patricia, A good step to start is to make a list of everything you are ready to let go of. After you've made that list reread and decide what you want to start with then write to me and ask for the next "assignment".
